Pros: +Huge Portions +Great Pricing Cons: +Needs a face-lift A friend of mine took me to this place and I'm hooked! After visiting a few times I'm shocked at how this place can profit from giving you so much for so little. I absolutely love the taste of the food here, I've never ordered anything I did not like and they are more than willing to let you experiment with different sauces and combinations when you order. The first thing you notice is that it's in a plaza that is more than half vacant but don't be discouraged! The inside is reminiscent of the 80's but so are food prices. For about $8-9 dollars for a dinner you get your choice of soups, chips and plum dipping sauce, egg roll and hot mustard, brown or white rice, HUGE two-person portions of chicken/beef/seafood etc, Ice Cream and Hot Tea afterwards! My only complaint is that this place needs a little renovation the facility is looking very date and the minor annoyance of the waitstaff yelling across the restaurant in mandarin Chinese makes me feel like I'm in someones kitchen. I love this place and I especially love "Mama" the cute Chinese grandmother I never had who runs the show.

I never would have known about this place had it not been for a bridal shower I attended a couple of weeks ago. Loved the food and the service! Last evening, decided to head there for a carry-out. The place was packed and regulars were coming in for take out. The owner greeted the regulars like family. My take out order was HUGE and the food was fantastic! 5 Stars for this tucked-away JEWEL in Oak Park. If you haven't tried them, you are truly missing something. It's the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Friends who have been there agree! Give them a try! Great food, great service, great prices!

After 3 years, I returned! After joining my brethren at the movies, we all made it to the area Chinese restaurants for the traditional Christmas dinner. Peking House was a nightmare - there had to be 50 people waiting for a table. So, on the road, this was our next choice. I did try to call ahead, but I'm pretty sure they didn't write anything down. It was just so insane. There were 20-30 people waiting for a table when we came at 6:30, and the place was just crazy. Lots of people were getting take-out, too, and there seemed to be issues with wrong orders. It took a very long time to get menus and our food, but most of us were pretty satisfied. I had the vegetable combo plate, which was, in fact, a combination of vegetables on a plate. It included some very tasty mushrooms, and tofu which was remarkably better than what I'd eaten the last time. Everybody agreed, though, that our food was rather salty. The rainbow sherbet was a nice option for dessert. Considering the sheer madness of the place, service was pleasant. The decor is not pretty, and the owner might be a little surly, but if you are looking to fight your way to a table on Christmas, this is a fine option.

Please order as carry out. I really like the food and their huge portions for the price. Lots of rice, good wonton and egg drop soup. Great almond chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and fried shrimp. The waitstaff provided good service. The interior however is in major need of renovation, but when you take the food back home or picnicking, there's no complaints.

If you like good Chinese food and want it reasonably priced, this may be the place. It's not a fancy restaurant with exotic (expensive) choices and you're not paying for decor and ambience-just good food. I would recommend the Sizzling Rice Soup-rich chicken broth with vegetables topped with sizzling rice. Also the subgum chop suey (your choice of meat) and the egg foo young is excellent too. Chinese food is really about mostly rice and vegetables so why pay $20+ per plate elsewhere? Service is speedy as well. Of course they do carry-out if time is an issue. A real value for your dining dollars.Located on the SE corner of 9 mile and Coolidge in Oak Park.

I thought this was a pretty decent Chinese restaurant. I visit there with my immediate family. The food is good- not fabulous but good none the less. The prices are very reasonable and the waitstaff is decent (the waitress even remembers what one in my party always orders). None the less, if looking for something a little fancier (both in food and decor) one might not choose this facility.. However, like an old friend, if you're in the area it's there for you....

The sizzling rice soup is excellent. The General chicken is quite good The rest is pretty ordinary chinese but I have always had good service and it has long hours and is close to home.

Any time I have Chinese it's the same dish. Sweet & Sour Chicken. Of course this was before I gave up all meat. I'm a sauce person. Ever had Chinese and the sweet & sour sauce wasn't thick enough. Watery in other words. This place get the sauce just right. Just enough sweet and just enough sour. And they add bite size pineapple pieces to it. Not pieces of a piece. They don't over-bread the chicken either. Nothing worse than eating what you believe is chicken only to find out it's mostly fried bread. If I ever get the urge for the sauce I'll head back.

Mediocre, dry Chinese food served in gigantic inexpensive portions. Notsogood. I visited with a large group. Service was fast but not friendly - rather terse, actually. I paid $9 for a HUGE portion of dry almond chicken. It was otherwise tasty. The gravy wasn't very good.

We were sat promptly. I had the moo goo gai. pan chicken combination. The wonton soup, egg roll and sherbet was wonderful. The chicken dish had big pieces of chicken. My wife and a friend had chicken dishes and enjoyed them. We had plenty left over to take home. The service was excellent. The prices were under $11 per person. I really enjoyed what I had. We took a carry out menu with us. I would highly recommend it. We will go back many times.

My absolute favorite Chinese place. Our family has been coming here for thirty years and has never left disappointed. We love the almond boneless chicken, and have been known to have four or five orders for it at a time. It is the standard by which I have measured all other Chinese places, and though I've found some good ones, nothing has ever beaten the original.

I had the Moo Shu chicken it was a bountiful plateful even after getting done I still had a quart to take home. I was here with a large group and the service was less than to be desired but being at dinner time was understandable.

I love this place. My friends and I get together on a weekly basis and have lunch. We are retired and like to try different cuisines throughout the city. We always come back to Golden Bowl. When we walk in the door the staff treat us like family, smiling and making us feel really welcome. And the lunch specials are really great. Choice of soup, egg roll, entree and fried rice, hot tea for under $10 dollars. The portions guaranteed to allow lunch the next day. The food is tasty and will not disappoint.

This used to be the place to come to for good take-out Chinese food...not anymore. Seems the parents have retired and now the kids are doing all the cooking. It's just not as good. But in their favor, it is a lot better than these pre-cooked, pre-packaged Chinese food joints that have popped up everywhere. My fav is the egg foo youngZ,

Someone on my thread suggested the Golden Bowl as a contender for some really good General Tso's. But I'm going to have to go ahead and say that he was, respectfully, out of his mind! And while he mentioned that the longtime cook had changed, I can't imagine the the food was much better to begin with. Granted I didn't try the whole menu but I got the gist from what landed in my styrofoam box. That said I'll keep this review strictly confined to the Tso's I ordered and the conversations therein. Before I get into that though, the lady answering the phone is completely indiscernible with her accent. I understand it's a Chinese restaurant but I'm still not sure what the hell she said to me after I gave her my order. On top of that, once I arrived and heard her taking orders for carry-out I still couldn't decipher what restaurant she was announcing to customers on the phone. I can respect a heavy accent but it's common courtesy to at least attempt to speak English to English speaking customers ordering food from you. They should consider having someone else answer their phone orders. The Tso's, and mind you I've never been here much less heard of the Golden Bowl, but the Tso's was horrific. I ordered the lunch combo as hot as they could make it with steamed rice and an egg roll. I can give them points for making the sauce itself fiery red in color but there was virtually no spice in the dish. They did give me a ton of food though! The rice easily being the best part of the meal - no joking! The egg roll was all sprouts and was pretty terrible in it's own rite, but the General's was maybe the worst I've ever had...white meat maybe, but super tough and in huge chunks of all different sizes from enormous slabs to tiny scraps. The sauce was an abomination. It was as if they spilled some sweet and sour along with some Sesame Chicken sauces together, threw in a pinch of red pepper flake and added the overcooked chicken back into the wok to thicken the sauce, poured it over some broccoli and boxed it up. I will say it was fairly cheap though but I won't be back.

Good food and decen service. Most food is good....you get more when you eat in for a combo as you get soup & egg roll....carryout only gets an eggroll. Definitely recommended though!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
